House Tours

Strawberry Hill House is internationally renowned as one of the best examples of Georgian Gothic architecture. Enjoy a guided tour of Horace Walpole's architectural masterpiece exploring the history, interiors and stories of its residents.

Tours departs at 10am. Booking is essential. If you are a group of 15 persons or more you may be interested in booking a private guided tour for preferential rates. Please e-mail tours@strawberryhillhouse.org.uk

Summer Sounds at Strawberry Hill House: picnic, Pimm's and toe-tapping tunes

Enjoy a relaxing summer evening listening to talented and uplifting bands in the beautiful gardens at Strawberry Hill House. What better way to end a busy weekend than to unwind with a glass of bubbly or minty Pimm’s with family and friends whilst enjoying a picnic and music tailored to suit the mood. 

The Swing Ninjas: Sunday 25 August 

Drawing on elements of New Orleans swing, spirituals, blues, cajun and jazz, all influenced by the UK new swing movement, The Swing Ninjas are a band you will want to dance to. Any live show is high energy, full of humour, passion and grooves that guarantee dancing across the ages.

Time: 4pm - 7.30pm

Gate opens at 3.45pm, with the performance starting at 4.45pm.

4.45pm - 5.30pm – first session 

6pm - 6.45pm – second session 

Refreshments, including Pimm's, prosecco, snacks and ice cream will be available to purchase from the Garden Café. You may like to arrive a little early to browse the unique and hand-made gifts and cards in our shop.

Garden Tours

The five-acre garden at Strawberry Hill House has been, as far as possible, restored to its original appearance using Eighteenth Century maps and paintings as well as Walpole’s own writing. Enjoy a guided tour of Horace Walpole's garden created to compliment his Gothic castle.

The Strawberry Hill House Flower Festival returns for a sixth successive year this September. This year, curators Leigh Chappell & Janne Ford have set the creative theme Nature Unbound to showcase the very best of British-grown, foam-free sustainable floristry, and the design creativity of the UK’s leading floral designers.

The beauty and opulence of Strawberry Hill House creates the perfect backdrop to showcase the work of invited florists who will share their artistry, expertise, and passion for sustainable floral design, shining a spotlight on the beauty, variety and versatility of the fresh and dried flowers and foliage cultivated by British flower farmers.

Strawberry Hill House Flower Festival 2024: Curator Tours

Explore the Flower Festival with an exclusive morning tour with Leigh Chappell, Festival Curator, to learn more about the floral installations on display and gain a greater insight into top floral techniques, followed by Coffee and a croissant in the Garden Cafe.

Strawberry Hill Flower Festival Tour and Talk

Friday 13 September, Doors open at 6.30 with talk and demonstration at 8pm

An evening tour followed by a demonstration and talk with Royal florist Simon Lycett. Tour the festival and then relax in the Gallery with a glass of fizz and listen to Simon who will be showcasing some amazing arranging inspired by the seasons and the spectacular setting of Strawberry Hill. Expect some unexpected combinations of colours, plant materials and all sustainably arranged - A Feast of Floral Fabulousness!

Since 1993 when Simon was asked to arrange flowers for Four Weddings and a funeral his spectacular floristry has been in high demand. His list of high-profile clients is synonymous with glamour. Simon has also worked on television and in 2023 was included in BBC’s Maestro line up. Simon and his team continue to create floral fabulous in venues across the UK and beyond.

Talk/Panel: Plants for Wellbeing

Friday 13 September, 12:30pm - 1:30pm 

Ashley Edwards, a Gardeners Question Time panellist on Radio 4 and the head gardener at Horatio’s Garden will give a talk about plants for wellbeing followed by an open panel discussion on growing. @plantsforwellbeing . He will be joined by flower farmers Char Johnson and Andy Heslop.

Demonstration: Autumn Bowl Arrangement

Friday 13 September, 1:30pm - 2:30pm

Join Joanne Truby whilst she creates an Autumn bowl arrangement. Using a plethora of beautiful autumnal ingredients, Joanne will share with you her approach to creating a garden inspired bowl design. Discussing how she uses colour and composition within her work to create natural inspired arrangements that really lean into the season.

Floral Still Life Workshop

Saturday 14 September,11:30am - 1pm 

This 90-minute art class led by Christabel will focus on an inspiring display of sustainable British flowers, freshly picked from Minnow and Wolf’s flower farm. Explore your creative side inspired by nature using oil pastels and coloured paper to create beautiful floral artwork. All art abilities welcome!

Workshop: Whispers of Nature: An Ikebana Workshop with Leaves, run by Ensō House's ikebana teacher, Wai Yan Sze

Saturday 14 September, 1pm-3pm

Ikebana is the Japanese traditional art of arranging flowers. It is a disciplined art form where nature intertwines with our individual creative expression. In this ikebana workshop, we'll explore the art of floral arrangement through the lens of leaves, acknowledging their significance not only in nature, but also in our lives. We'll draw inspiration from their resilience and transformation, and beauty and impermanence. This workshop invites you to explore the beauty of leaves and the profound connection between people and the natural world.

Talk / Demonstration: Colour and Seasonality with Joanna Game

Saturday 14 September, 2pm - 3pm

Joanna Game is a floral artist using and inspired by the wildness she is surrounded by at home on Dartmoor.
She runs seasonal classes from her Devon studio and a yearly spring retreat in Cornwall for flower and nature loving artists.

Join her to hear her talk. This will show, in the making of a wild and seasonal urn arrangement, how both the seasons and a connection to nature and colour inform her work.

Demonstration: The Art of Drying Perennial Flowers

Sunday 15 September, 11am - 12pm

Learn how to dry British favourites such as narcissi, ranunculus including buttercups, peonies, delphiniums and dahlias. Most 'dried everlastings' are papery, southern hemisphere annuals but I will teach you how to naturally extend the life of your favourite perennial flowers that you cut and bring into the house; garden style or special occasion flowers that you want to preserve.
